Chira Sweet Medicine

Posted on Mar 2nd, 2008 by wanaketapo : wanaketapo wanaketapo
My teacher is named Chira Sweet Medicine. Eleven years ago this coming Monday, March 3rd she walked on into the Spirit World she would have been 74 on April 1st. Not many of you have even heard of her but of the ones that have met her, all remember her; many sat in her lap on first acquaintance. I remember her well.

She learned to fast and pray for 40 days and received many gifts of Spirit under her first teacher, Sudi. She was a minister in the charismatic church at 17 then studied Kriya yoga under Audley Allison, an enlightened being, made a teacher by Muktananda who taught her about chakras and energy systems. She taught about the microcosm and macrocosm and star people long before many spoke of these things. She was a visionary, a seer, and loved and worked deeply for Spirit and planetary evolution and the global family since she was a teenager. She sought the Red Road to learn about her Cherokee heritage. That is when Mary Thunder came into her life. With her she learned about Native American Spirituality, a healing way of life for their next generations and the path of the sacred pipe. She was one of Thunders first students and one of the few to be made a teacher and she did her best to honor, support, serve, heal, love and irritate her teacher and her students until the day she passed. Chira, along with Tina, Bear, Horse, Butch, Gussy, Mike, Sparky, Shari and many more were students together. She was a student from 1982 until 1997 she had a couple of dozen students and a large support community/family in Dallas and later in a little town called Wizard Wells, Texas.

I have been told she showed up once in a white dress expecting a party and a "lodge" to be a large log cabin kind of thing, not so much a muddy lump out in a field covered in plastic. At that time Thunder had a bad thing for Pacman and showed up later than arranged. That was Chira's first lesson in "Indian time". She celebrated her 50th birthday at one of Thunders first lodges in McKinney Texas, where her bothers, sisters and children all prayed in this way together for the first time. Her birthday wish came true.

If you are interested is some of the Sweet Medicine Family history, ask her daughters Tina and Cynthia Emerson, her son Nick, her sisters Aunt Mary, Aunt Joyce, or her students who continue to follow her path of joyful service, celebration and passion for life . Those students are myself Libby, Suzan, Kris, Danielle, Crow, Sophia Katherine (Kate), Mark or Brittney--her first grand-student.

Chira taught of unconditional love of spirit, the cosmic Christ consciousness, life and loving one another and empowered us to have our own connection to Spirit. She had many visions of which we all continue to share and work towards fruition. One of her favorite saying was "You don't have to suffer to heal and you don't have to be sick to die. There is a difference between spiritually sacrificing and suffering to heal."

Another of her sayings was "Jesus suffered in his sacrifice so not another two legged would have to suffer, but could instead sacrifice in joy, and celebration. `Hu-man' breaks down to mean this; Hu is God, and Man is all us two-leggeds. The humanness within the divinity and the divinity is within the humanness. And that is how `we are all related'."

She always told us we needed to shift from the Piscean age of suffering to the Aquarian age of enlightenment; that time was moving faster and how much faster information is coming into the youngers. If you want to be effective, you have to stay in the current of the now.

She continues to remind us of our oneness with Spirit, and the importance of growth in our earth school experience as well as to love, and have compassion for each other. Knowing, being, and expressing Mitakuye Oyasin.

There are only 4 lessons in our lifetime. They just get in bigger boxes and prettier bows as we travel up the spiral of life...sex, money, power and ego. ~Chira Sweet Medicine

"Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak
against yourself, or to gossip about others. Use the power of
your word in the direction of truth and love."
